Psalm 1

One of the most encouraging books in the Bible, is the book of Psalms.  Many of the Psalms were written by people going through difficulties.  When you read them, you can hear the sadness, anguish, frustration, impatience, and pain of their respective experiences.  You can also hear the resolution, surrender, and joy that comes from choosing to look at the situation differently, changing the situation, or trusting God despite the situation.  I am challenging myself to walk through the Psalms and provide encouragement for you on your mental health journey!

Psalm 1 is encouragement for the person who chooses to follow God’s path.  Here is a promise of establishment when we take pleasure in God and his laws (ways of life/boundaries).  The blessing is that we can be established like a tree planted by the rivers of water, producing nourishing fruit in the right seasons of life.  What we produce won’t be in lack and what we do will be prosperous.  This includes our mental health.  We can be prosperous in mind, we can pe prosperous in our emotional stability.  Often times believers find God’s laws hard, even impossible to follow.  Many of them are challenging.  But God, in His perfection, created these boundaries to keep us safe, not to hurt us. The blessing is that we have Jesus, who is alive, and is our mediator who fulfilled the law for us.  Jesus obeyed every commandment of God.  We humans have difficulty obeying the commands but we have help.  We have Jesus who helps us daily and we have the Holy Spirit who empowers us daily.  God wants good things for us.  Jesus tells us “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly (John 10:10 NKJV).  Jesus’ disciple, John wrote to us saying, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well (3 John 1:2 NIV).  God’s desire is for us to be prosperous and abundant in every area of life.  We can meditate on these scriptures, write them out, speak them consistently to help us strengthen our belief system, faith, and relationship.
